A Promised Land

by Hugh Doolan

1.
The moment it is more certain than this Look back at the sun like the blinded one Longer than his shadow a traitor's kiss Let's talk my son before the hills have you run poor time on my mind needs attention of your kind ship me to the treadmill slip me that bitter pill I'll work another day breaking rocks for little pay --CHORUS-- Hunter Gatherer Plain Joe Saddler waging war just to even scores for a toddler's cart and my sweetheart sit me in the corner I'll jump you to the door slice my heart in half now you've taken a score do it twice it won't hurt any more than it has in the past before CHORUS The moment it was switched to die and cast I looked to the last man snatched his beads and ran You're stronger than this cool traitor's kiss Let's walk now my son 'neath the trees a-blossom Some things need saying Without pride paying CHORUS But you must stand tall at every morning's call To work another day punching clocks have their say. I'll bend like tide to moon Tin to silver will your spoon
2.
I have been broken in two when I'm without you I have been seen as being mean but that's just me to you can you come on over to my side kick the ball, trenches dug in the hall with you on each side yes, you on each side it just might, just might help us all you hear me doll I love ya such&such never gonna be much use 'less we live and let loose live and let loose, just a bit
3.
On the border where hope meets despair A sign you see reads: “Life's not fair” To which you nod Then wince to let fly Foul expletives To bleed your venom dry I don't deserve this And neither do you It's just poor service Busted out of the blue let's make a stand like brothers in a band shake me by the hand speed me to a promised land, where I can live or die trying The French Revolt They never do what they're told For every lightning bolt comes a sure thunder-blow So if you can stand in the mad rain Then you can breakdance all the way to Spain --CHORUS On the border where hope beat despair A new sign you hold reads: “Devils may care” let's make a stand like sisters in a band take a brother by the hand leave him in the promised land, where he can live or die trying

Slow Train 03:31
I fell awake too late to realize what the living like this it can do to your mind I thought something bright would see the blues away but it wasn't enough for to hear me say CHORUS: I need a slow train to take me off this fast lane Oh I need a slow train armed with a smile to make it through the day I suddenly remembered what had been a haze the dumb dull lines of incomprehension the headroom meetings I'd care not to mention then later on it's gone by the wayside nothing was wrong from relief I could sigh you know though for sure you'll still keep it up til the lid on your box it is firmly shut
6.
Framing the common man in his living room or kitchen where once he stood a foot higher waves now swell around every decision I want to pull jewels from the sky made of hope and few regrets that shine and blind the seal on each envelope of threats The cowl it near blew off when the wind did howl in from the north I crouched and snuck into a bush put my ear to the ground that shook *Bless the mess hold the fold Creaking at the seams of the smiley mould
7.
I'm a stone's throw from failure my pockets have holes in them I'm a stone's throw from death's door dying for some attention I need a prime time line to you If it's not real then virtual will do I'd cross the desert in a storm skip the casbah under starry skies I'd cross the desert in a storm just to see your dazzling eyes there's nothing that I wouldn't do to push the Nile back a mile or two for you I look for magic in the sunset helps my soul to sing I look for magic in the sunset magic in everything. The love that loves is very strong The light of this love lingers long I'm a fool with nothing special 'cept what I feel in my bones I'm a fool with nothing special no credit to call home If I could leave all my stones behind me with you or without you I'd be free I'm a stone's throw from your door bell ring ring ding -a-ling I'm a stone's throw from your door bell trying to win your affection I'll be the guy for you rough n smooth, thru and thru

Cats & Dogs 03:34
Cats and dogs they fight all day And all through the night They bark and scratch and play some catch That’s the life they live Boys and girls they play together Then they have a fight They howl and scowl then laugh together That’s the life they live That’s the life they live Nothing they wouldn’t give To hold oh so still every moment’s new thrill Mums and Dads they work all day And try to sleep at night They hear alarms and get up from Their beds in quiet misery That’s the life they live That’s the life they give Never to be told If it’s not shiny it’s not gold You and me we can’t agree On what to have for tea We compromise so don’t capsize That’s the life we live That’s the life we live That’s the life we give Never to be told If it’s not shiny it’s not gold
9.
All My Fears 04:09
walking home alone my head's not in the zone where decisions come easy can't decide if I'm goin' crazy or if I'm just plain lazy the dogs on the street they howl when they see me they scowl like a scene from the wilderness crying out with tenderness now all my fears are put to rest I'll make it on my own now ...thank you my perspective's pointing south I've moved into the moment where resolve just can't be broken now all my tears aren't chokin' and my heart's definitely no longer broken no longer broken.. no longer broken all my fears all my fears are gone even though I'm all alone
10.
I spend all day in camouflage sitting in a little hut wanting to break down the code to start again on the right foot All the tricks in this mirage are so hard to simplify they want to blind-side my soul and paint my life as one big lie Chorus 1 You call out, you call out to the wind to blow me home fall out, fall out of this rut roll me into town I'm gonna meet you after all get up on my feet get up on the ball You stop the colours turning yellow to grey you are the sunrise I see at turn of each day I'd be on my knees without your open arms at sea without your sirens and charms Chorus 2 You call out, you call out to the wind to blow me home fall out, fall out of this rut roll me into town I'm gonna meet you after all get up on my feet get up on the ball You crack the shield that unblocks the sun you stamp your boots on my destitution a lifesaver with no return favour for you miracles are not difficult
11.
Green River 03:06
Standing at the banks of the green river winding slowly to the sea. Pacing all about me your sorry looking soul sweating beads of holy water Blood flowing fast thru your broken heart and if it slows I'll push hard to start We landed a big fish from the green river we were the ones left gutted! I chanced I would ask for some new directions I reached for her hand and I took it She led me past the gates to her heart then she showed me the river's ramparts Freedom's in the flowing Freedom's in the knowing Green river leads me down slowly x 3 Green river leads me down slowly

Nearly 5 years in the making, it's a collection of folk, blues and soulfully contemporary songs, with a host of guest artists adding to the acoustically driven musical fabric - check out Derek Cornett’s fantastic guitar solo on Cats & Dogs @1m58s. Hugh’s voice is tinged with folk-soul velvetness with lyrics that cover the earnest, the everyday and the poetic, from one song to the next.
